SwingIQ cuts every swing into eight steps and knows the theory behind those steps. If one of your swings is closer to that theory than your current best shot, SwingIQ sets it aside for you as a candidate for your best shot. You see it with that club's swings, in the app and on the website.
SwingIQ only suggests; you decide. Until you choose, your best shot stays as it is.
Why this swing
With a candidate you read why SwingIQ suggests it. These are points from the theory that this swing meets and your current best shot does not, for example:
- You kept your posture until Impact;
- At Impact your head stayed behind the ball;
- Your hips stayed in place until Top, without sliding away from the target.
Below that you read what else SwingIQ knows: for example that the ball was not recognised in your current best shot, or that this swing was called Good after it was hit. You do not see a number or a percentage.
SwingIQ looks at your body at two moments: at the top of the backswing and when you strike the ball. Each swing is compared with its own set-up, not with another golfer. What the club does is not measured here. So watch the swing yourself before you choose.
How to do it
Go to Swings. The swing that is the candidate has a small thumbs-up at the bottom right. Tap the thumbs-up: you see Candidate for your best shot, with the swing it is about, the explanation and three buttons:
- Set as best shot — this is your best shot for that club right away.
- Ignore — the thumbs-up disappears and the swing is not offered again. The swing itself stays in your list.
- Close — you do not choose now and the swing stays a candidate. Tapping next to the window does the same.
Want to watch the swing again first? Then tap the swing itself, next to the thumbs-up.
What happens when you choose
- If you set the candidate, your comparisons follow your new example. From that moment, SwingIQ puts your swings with that club next to this swing. Read what that means for your earlier comparisons in What happens when I change my best shot? After that, SwingIQ looks again whether another swing is even closer to the theory.
- If you ignore the candidate, the suggestion does not move on to another swing. Your choice also covers the swings that were already there at that moment and are less close to the theory. A swing you record after that can become a candidate again.
- If you pick a different best shot yourself with the star, the candidate lapses. You have chosen for that club.
When a swing becomes a candidate
There is at most one candidate per club: the swing that is closest to the theory. It has to be clearly closer than your current best shot; a small difference is not enough.
The recording also has to be able to serve as an example:
- all eight steps of the swing were found;
- the recording was made from the front;
- the ball was recognised while you stood ready, and so was the direction you are playing in.
If a swing was called Bad, Topped or Fat after it was hit, it does not become a candidate. Your answer Good does not make a swing a candidate by itself; it does appear with the explanation.
If a club has no best shot yet, SwingIQ suggests the swing that is closest to the theory, as soon as you have recorded three swings with that club.
If the steps of a swing are adjusted later, SwingIQ looks again. The same goes when the steps of your best shot are adjusted. A swing can then become a candidate after all, or stop being one.
The notification
When a club gets a candidate, you get one message about it in your notifications list. For the same golfer and the same club, such a message comes at most once every two weeks.
Tap the message: Go to your swings takes you to your swings, where the candidate is waiting.
Switching candidates off
Would you rather not see candidates? In the app, go to Settings and switch off Show candidates for your best shot. That applies to your whole account: candidates are then shown nowhere, not on the website either, and you get no message about them. Switch it back on and you immediately see the candidate of that moment.
Good to know
If a club has no best shot yet, the candidate says so. A candidate is where your comparison starts.
If your account has several golfers, each golfer has their own candidates.
The putter has no candidates.
Candidates are available on every subscription.
No connection? Your choice is saved and passed on as soon as you are back online.

How to do it
Go to Swings. Above the club's swings you see the card Candidate for your best shot, with the explanation and three choices:
- View — opens the swing, so you can watch it again first.
- Set as best shot — the site asks Set as best shot? Once you confirm, this is your best shot for that club.
- Ignore — the candidate leaves the card and is not offered again. The swing itself stays in your list.
